Re: Iris x altobarbata

First; I double checked and I mispelled Murray, my apologies. It is a legitimately published name. I thought I had copied the whole article onto my computer (it is quite short) but I can't find the file. Essentially it says tallbearded irises of hybrid origin and tetraploid. Therefore the name does not cover diploids. Kohlein used the name in hi book on Iris but other than that I have never seen it used in Iris literature. It certainly avoids some of the craziness with the name germanica and probably should be used by most garden writers as a better name for these hybrids.

Hi,

I'm curious how Murrey defined the name x altobarbata. Is it a legitamately
published botanical name; does it define the hybrid parentage; or, is it a
horticultural name? I'm going to try to track down the publication, but in
the meantime, my curiousity is a bit impatient.

Thanks,
Dave
