Re: Varda gorge species - I. macedonia?

There seem to be a couple of confusions in this thread on macedonica. First, My interpretation of the label that Jan wrote about would not indicate that the Iris was being called macedonica but that it was an unidentified species from the Varda Gorge in Macedonia. Index Kewensis gives a reference to original diagnoses and provides Iris macedonica Nadji -- Emp. Ottom. [Pl. de Salon.] (1892) 40, nomen. If I ever get some free time I will try to look up and see what type of description is given. I suspect this will turn out to be another variation of Iris reichenbachii. Since the seed came from Harold Mathes and I know he knows what Iris reichenbachii looks like, so it must be a plant that is distinct enough that he did not want to assign a species name. Who knows it may be an undescribed species from Macedonia and not Iris macedonia.
