SV: Another photo of this iris

Hi Jim and Jamie,

You will find several spuria species seed in BIS’s coming seedlist.

As you might now, do we also have one protected spuria in Denmark – spuria v. Danica. I have got my plants from The Botanical Garden in Copenhagen. It can be found only a few kilometres’ from Copenhagen – a few places on the islands Amager and Saltholm.

Med venlig hilsen / Kind regards

Jim,

my main interest with Iris lies with the Oncocyclus and Regelias, although I have quite a few water iris, such as ensatas, Louisianas and laevigatae.  I used to work with spurias, but they are mainly too large for a smaller garden, which is what I have at the moment.

I don't expect you will have too much trouble with spurias being hardy.  The species I. spuria is found all along the Baltic area into Russia.  Hybrids tend to sort themselves out.  The strong survive.  Also, I. spuria is very tolerant of salt water.

I wish you luck with your hybrids and, if there is one piece of advise any hybridizer should get, it's take notes, keep records and fotograph everything.

Ciao für now,

Hello Jamie,

Thank you very much for your most informative reply.  I will try the cross you suggested this coming season.

Are you doing any hybridizing work with this group of irises?  I am hoping to get started with this group as I think this part of Canada (Saskatchewan which is in the middle of the prairies and has relatively dry warm summers) would be good for growing spurias although I suppose I would have to select for cold hardiness.
