Re: Anchorage, setosa, and Iris Encyclopedia

Mark,

The snow was gone after the second day, but now we have had frost for the 4th time and this morning the temperatures dropped to - 3 º C for the first time. Not good!, there are too many pots of Iris Hosta and daylilies standing around, waiting for space in the garden. Trying to renovate and remove grasses that have taken over, is not going too well. You miss a 1 " piece of root and it starts growing again.... At the same time the grasses attract voles from the surrounding properties and love to dine on iris ensata,  sibiricas.etc... For the time being we have clear skies, but with these low temperatures, we will get snow that may stay....

Liselotte,
Will that snow stay for the winter, or will it melt?  As for our cold spells, from late fall till early spring, when a cold front goes through, the air behind it often gets very dry.  That allows our night temperatures to really fall.  The normal winter low here in January is about 39° F [4° C] but in the time I have lived here, I have seen it as low as 12° F or -12° C.
Last night, we had a big soaking rain.  A cold front has come through, and the temperature has gone down a good bit.
