At one of the last meetings the AIS board invited the TBIS to be a cooperating society which is what they have said they wanted. But to my knowledge the TBIS has never answered. It was made as a motion of the AIS board that they would be, but They have had no board actions to accept.
Years ago all sections like SIGNA required membership in AIS. Because some people did not wish the focus on all Irises but only on the special group of the section, it was made possible that you could join a section but not pay AIS dues, which largely pay for printing the AIS Bulletin. But SIGNA is not really a totally separate organization but a part of AIS. Nonetheless most of it business is conducted independently but AIS still does the heavy lifting; for example; insurance for SIGNA members and events, the awards system and judging and sponsors the research on Iris species and more. Essentually SIGNA really has only the production of its publications to worry about. It is quite considerate to join both.
