Re: SIGNA Summer Newsletter

Bob is being a little modest as the production of the publications is much more than the Newsletter it includes great works such as the Species Iris Checklist for which he spent many years working on with others.  We also provide the largest Iris Seed exchange in the world for our members and also for others after our members have gotten their choices.   As to the heavy lifting of AIS...the awards system is run by the AIS but the SIGNA Medals are provided by SIGNA.  And most of the Science research is paid for by the AIS Foundation, a separate organization not under the rule of AIS.

Years ago all sections like SIGNA required membership in AIS. Because some people did not wish the focus on all Irises but only on the special group of the section, it was made possible that you could join a section but not pay AIS dues, which largely pay for printing the AIS Bulletin. But SIGNA is not really a totally separate organization but a part of AIS. Nonetheless most of it business is conducted independently  but AIS still does the heavy lifting; for example; insurance for SIGNA members and events, the awards system and judging and sponsors the research on Iris species and more. Essentually SIGNA really has only the production of its publications to worry about. It is quite considerate to join both.

Okay, so no changes there. I had understood that TBIS wanted to be a Cooperating Society but AIS said they could only be a Section and there the matter stood. I must be in the dark yet again. Eh. Tant pis.

Are we a Cooperating Society? I thought SIGNA was a Section.

SIGNA is a Section of AIS.

Only Aril Society International (ASI), Society for Louisiana Irises (SLI), and Tall Bearded Iris Society (TBIS) are Cooperating Societies. Not terribly sure if TBIS has become official yet.
