Re: Elaine Hulbert

I communicated with her in relation to my ongoing research into the horticultural history of Iris persica L.  She published in SIGNA a notice of a clone she had obtained in the trade, and in response to my questions, graciously sent me a photo of it:growing in western Virginia. It was a warm mulberry shade, quite unusual, according to Kew, but clearly identifiable as Iris persica, She lost it some time later. There have been several sorts of what might be called  "purple persicas.," Some were not persica at all, and some others were planned hybrids. One day I will try to write a piece sorting it all out.

Hello friends,
I have just received a note informing me of the passing of Elaine Hulbert, a past president of SIGNA and a very well known person in the iris world.  Here is the note in its entirety:
âDear Mr. Walkup,
I am writing to inform SIGNA of the death of past president Elaine Perry Hulbert July 15, 2013.  Would you be willing to print a notice of this and let members know?  I am eager to hear from anyone who has recollections of her.  Please include my address.  Thank you.
Catherine Hulbert, 7 Histon Rd., Trumbull, CT, 06611
PS, Members can honor her memory by accosting a stranger and saying, âLet me tell you why I love irises!â

I had a brief correspondence with her a few years back and really admired her enthusiasm and willingness to spend a little time writing to me.  I think weâll probably want to print something in the newsletter about her.
