OT: Humor in naming iris

I always wondered where Ben Hager got the below name but never
remembered to ask until too late.

PING AND PANG (B. Hager, R. 1976). Sdlg. S447D. SPU, 36" (91 cm), M.
PING = white self; yellow signal. PANG = lavender-blue self; yellow
signal. Bilateral chimera. First bloomstalk had half white, half
lavender-blue flowers; increase from one side of plant is white, from
other is lavender-blue, Marilyn Holloway X Allegory.

Today, in a full house performance of Puccini's 'Turandot' I smote my
forehead with the heel of my hand and muttered: Aaah!! THAT'S where
he got the name!"

(Ping, Pang and Pong are are respectively; the Grand Chancellor, a
General Purveyor and the Chief Cook and provide comic relief and good
three part harmony)

I never knew Ben was an Opera buff.

Cheers,

I did not admit to being an iris buff as the ushers shushed me.
