31st March I.reticulata burst forth in a patch of about a dozen
flowers. Very early but this year has seen an exceptionally warm winter
here in Ottawa. We received almost no snow and only one period when the
temperature could be considered really cold, that is about -50 C wind
chill for a couple of days.
I have just finished a complete, and I mean complete, clean up of every
iris. All dead leaves collected and the plants cut back so that all
borer eggs are on their way to the city dump! Assuming that the females
tend to lay their eggs on or near iris leaves, [has anyone ever shown if
that is a reasonable assumption?], I should be completely void of borers
this year and, therefore, will not have to spray with Cygon! Is the
risk of not spaying worth it? The smell alone makes me ill so no
spraying and I will watch for the small notches the young larvae make at
the edge of the new leaves.
On another matter, have people seen the magnificent reticulate irises
that Alan McMurtrie has just breed? He has distributed pictures
attached to a couple of recent e-mails. The picutures should be posted
on a general website where everyone can see them.
Ian, in Ottawa who recently had a visit from Sandy Ives carrying a
flowering Iris graeberiana.
