We are having a great siege of bacterial leaf spot, after about four days
of cloudy, drizzly, warm weather. I think this may be some of the problem
also referred to in earlier posts, where people have talked about the spots
on leaves running together and destroying the whole leaf. Bacterial leaf
spot begins as soft, translucent spots in leaves less than an eighth of an
inch in diameter, usually near the leaf tip. The spots run together and
can quickly (2-3 days) destroy a whole leaf. This is different from fungal
leaf spot, which develops more slowly and in which the spots do not run
together so much. The fungal version tends to "dry out" the leaf, while the
bacterial version makes a soft, mushy mess.
This is the first time in about 30 years I have had this problem. It is
interesting to observe that some varieties of those I grow are far more
susceptable to it. SPICED CUSTARD and GOOD VIBRATIONS have been almost
destroyed, while TITAN'S GLORY, for example, growing adjacent to these two,
is nearly unaffected.
It appears that there is no good immediate remedy for bacterial leaf spot
but drier weather, though I think some people have tried agricultural
antibiotics. This I am loath to do because it is a quick way to select for
antibiotic resistance in the environment, something we don't need more of.
Does anyone have any more ideas?
