All,
In the beginning, with 2 acres to play with, I mass hybridized. I crossed
anything that didn't get up and run or fall over with rot. My main focus was
to cross modern warm climate rebloomers with hard core cold country
rebloomers, while maintaining strength. I was not especially concerned with
the qualities of 1st generation children, other than strength.
When I moved, I brought a limited number of seedlings. Now, with reduced
space, I am casting a more critical eye at things like branching. Two of my
mystery iris (Mart) have great branching, vigor, and are well balanced. I
would love to use NOT GLAZED GOLD, and NOT LACEY SNOWFLAKE in breeding, but
I've always hated to list parentage as unknown. I am even less inclined due
to the recent revelations about seedlings being sold under the name of a
parent by the dutch nurseries!
NOT GLAZED GOLD, bloomed yesterday. First thing after JESSIE'S SONG. NOT
GLAZED GOLD is a yellow plicata. Gold standards, white falls with a 1/2 plus
gold band on the falls. Rich gold beard. Very early bloomer. I thought it
might be DEBBIE RAIRDON but DR is listed as a late bloomer.
NOT LACY SNOWFLAKE is a lacy white but with a red beard. Well branched with
good growth habits.
Both of these have qualities I am looking for, BUT???? What do you all think?
