I have been perusing the online R&I's with great interest.
One thing I have noticed: I have not found a hybridizer
that actually used RHS colour codes, but I haven't
done an exhaustive search, either.<
Styles change. Back in the 60s, many used H.C.C. color names -- but how
many people know the difference between French Rose & Claret Rose? And
what about something like Brick Red, which has been applied to several
different shades?
In the 70s, the desire was for the greater precision that numbers provided.
I learned to use the charts from hybridizers like Howard Shockey & Gene
Hunt. Quickly glancing through the 70s CL, I see registrations with RHS
codes from other well-known hybridizers like Jim Gibson, Melba Hamblen,
Currier McEwen, & the Mohrs. I'm sure there were many more and -- yes ---
others used other systems.
By the 80s, simplicity was coming back in style. Then-Registrar Kay Nelson
encouraged us to write descriptions without relying on color numbers or
obscure color names, if possible. But even when I've registered a "plain
English" descriptions, I've found my RHS notes valuable.
