The first rhizomatous iris of the season bloomed here today, and as usual
it was ALPINE LAKE (Willott, 1981) - thanks to Tony and Dorothy for giving
us this charming little harbinger of the iris season! It bloomed one day
later than it did last year, but this still indicates a "normal" bloom
season ahead, and reminds me that I need to get the order for show supplies
in the mail. Seedlings are starting to sprout, too. So far only from SIGNA
seed and not my own - mixed PCN's and I. Tectorum 'Woolong' indoors and
mixed Sino-Sibs and tet Sib 'Prussian Blue' outdoors. Curiously enough in
light of a posting from Griff Crump that I have just read, the Angel's
Trumpets (Datura stramonium) seeds I sowed are sprouting like mad. This is
the first time I have grown this species - will have to keep them well away
from the greens in the veggie garden! (-:

It has been on the dry side here since the weather warmed up. Not enough to
retard the growth of the irises, but unlike the last two damp springs,
there is no sign of leaf spot anywhere right now.

Jeff Walters in northern Utah - which from a distance (say east of the
Mississippi and south of the Mason-Dixon line) can look an awful lot like
Idaho!
