As with film photography it depends on the camera. Up until
maybe a year and a half ago most digital cameras under
$10,000 were point-and-shoot. They didn't have the resolution
to attract a lot of serious amateur photographers. Once the
camera resolution started moving into the megapixel range,
photographers started taking notice and wanting more
features. Aperture priority mode and often full manual
modes seem common on the newer high-end consumer
models. Even now, digital SLR cameras with standard
interchangable lenses start at $6000 (with a $5000
model anounced to come out in a couple months). I have
a digital SLR with a built-in zoom lens (much less expensive)
and a full range of controls. I've found aperature-priority mode
very helpful in phtographing iris and other flowers.
