Rosalie -- Yes, you're on iris-talk. Having visited your garden, I'm
surprised to hear that you had a deer in your garden, but I guess they're
liable to turn up anyplace these days. I had my first deer problem this
winter. I was checking the seedling plot when, from a distance, I could see
that half of the fence and the gate on one end of the plot were down. I
stalked down the garden path muttering unkind things about the
"blankety-blank teenagers". But when I reached the damage, I found deep
hoofprints in the middle of the downed fence -- the kind that are made by a
deer landing with force. The paths between the rows of plants were a welter
of deer tracks, where they had wandered up and down. They hadn't damaged
the iris. They must have been seeking an easy entrance to my neighbors'
vegetable gardens, which are higher-fenced on the outside than mine. Well,
up until now, I've only had one form of wildlife on my "hate" list. I hate
a fish with poor aim (strikes, but misses the hook). I guess I'll have to
add a clumsy deer.

. . . That was when I fenced in my
backyard - with a 5' Anchor Fence. However it does not keep out some cats
(mine is strictly a housecat) NOR squirrels, which are the bane of my
existence in that they dig up certain irises (they seem to have a preference
- one I have replanted 6 times -- and finally moved it.) and I have had a
fox once! also a deer! thankfully only once! and I must find that spot
where those not-Easter bunnies get in!
