My yard seems to be have all peaked at about the same time this year.
That one freak Saturday of extra hot weather seems to have been the
trigger, and even things that have never bloomed for me before are
blooming. Bad news is, the season may be over early.
Couldn't decide which pink was better, Valentine's Day or In Person, so I
did the only thing I could (crossed them).
Still making selective neglecta crosses; if I can get form and vigor and
branching, then I'll go back and see if I can bring back the true blue
coloring so wonderful on the Schreiners neglectas. Purple ones can be
nice, but I do love that blue. Just wish I could find a vigorous one with
modern ruffled form and closed standards.
All my first-bloom seedlings this year are dogs; open standards and boring
or ugly coloration being the most common flaws. Didn't stop Thornbird, but
in my garden it would have. One lumi-plic was interesting, but spindly and
w/open standards. My wife liked one dirty peach; guess I'll have to get
rid of it when she's not looking. Not one "broken color" seedling from 4
"broken color" crosses, and the form was as expected from the genre.
Double Vision opened yesterday. Great color, though the stalk is a little
weak. It's new in my garden, so I don't know if it's always that way.
Only 2 small increases on it.
