As you suspect, the top bloom generally is the biggest & best. The
difference is more pronounced on weak/poorly established plants. Some iris
will show more buds and less size differential after the clump matures;
others become weaker and more stunted. For example, Bengal Tiger and Ebony
Dream generally seem to get stunted; but I had untouched clumps of Persian
Berry and Pagan Pink for years that just got better and better.
