Re: TB: Calling all weird iris (from AIS-Dallas)

I was quite taken with David Niswonger's 'Smoke and Mirrors' (TB 00) in
Dallas.

As I recall, it was blooming in one garden. The beard was quite
striking; reminded me of a very furry caterpillar with a very clear
separation between the grey and the yellow sections.

If you go by Dave's description, it is not weird at all. Really, you
have to see it in the garden. The catalogue photo does not capture the
colour separation nearly as well as my imagination does.

"This smokish mauve pink comes from breeding for pinks with blue
beards. It has a blue beard that is tipped tangerine and has a slight
mauve streak that goes down the centre of the falls from the beard. It
is well branched as well as having all the other good traits including
vigour." (spelling mine)

The other unusual iris was seedling TB95I3 from Rob Stetson in the
Begley garden. It was a blue space-age with triple layered flounces.
On the Tuesday tour, it was very eye-catching. There were a minimum of
seven buds and the form seemed quite good. Does anyone have a photo
they can post to I-P?

Regards,

Sandy Ives in Ottawa (z4ish, and no bearded iris in bloom)
