CULT: borer?

I feel like johnny-one-note but in my garden iris stalks "bitten" off
cleanly below the bud are more often the work of four hoofed mammals
that anything from the insect world. Yes, borers do get in stalks but
here there's classic borer damage accompanied by frass and slime, and
sometimes it is cutworms. I know it sounds nuts, but to have all stalks
cut sounds an awful lot like deer. Could that be possible?
