I think this may fall in the category of gallows humor, but it does
amuse me so, as the directions say, I just can't resist sharing my
musings as I start my annual iris vacation (3 weeks this year instead of
2).
Irisarians have to be the most optimistic people I've ever run across -
we 'see' our iris patch in the most idealized mode imaginable. If only
we hadn't had that last bad freeze, if only it hadn't rained so much, if
only it had rained more, if only we'd had more snow cover, if only we'd
had more sun, less heat, more cold,...if only the deer hadn't, if only
the dogs hadn't, if only I'd made that cross, if only... I used to
think of some of that as making excuses for poor vigor under
incompatible climate, but after I went out and looked closely at the
mess growing out in the garden, with blasted buds, and some of the worst
diseased/freeze injured foliage I can remember, and the distorted, awry
freeze damaged IBs that are opening, and then remember how it looked in
my mind's eye BEFORE I went out and looked more closely - luxuriant
growth, buds on TBs starting to show color, stalks popping everywhere,
new cultivars putting up super tall stalks with heavy buds count,
seedlings making stalks for the first time....
Linda Mann east Tennessee USA zone 7? 8? 6?
The heat zone webpage sez I am zone 7. Period. No other zone
attempted by them for my zipcode other than the existing USDA zone.
