Re: SHOW: San Diego Iris Society Show

Dennis and all:

Actually, it very well COULD be anything else.

In an iris show, the popularity of an iris entered, how new an iris is, and
who the hybridizer is should have nothing to do with the outcome. The awards
are based on Exhibition Judging, which is quite different from Garden
Judging.

In other words, the judges give the awards to the best iris stalk - the one
that looks the best, has been groomed properly, and entered correctly. The
stalk should represent the absolute best that that particular cultivar can
represent, in comparison to the other entries. An iris could be very ugly,
but if it has been grown correctly, and the prep work has been done to
assure good branching, and it has been groomed properly prior to the show,
and the label is filled out correctly, and it is a better representative of
all the other things judges look for, then it may win queen of show.

A good way to remember this is: Exhibition judging is judging the
exhibitor's ability to grow and display a superior stalk. Garden judging is
judging the actual iris.

I will get off my soap box for now...but I just wanted everyone who may not
have known there was a difference to realize that entering a great growing,
new, or popular iris does not necessarily mean you'll get Queen of Show with
it. There are criteria spelled out in the latest version of the AIS Judges
Training Manual that should be read if you plan to enter a show.
