I've been reading the posts about the clean cut on the iris bloomstalks with
interest. We have had a similar thing happen here with lilies (lilium). I
had a wonderful stand of white asiatics along my drive (for an envisioned
white garden, that quickly succumed to "I have a plant and I need a space to
plant it... and WAIT, there's a space...). Anyway, two years ago, every
single lily was cut off as you describe, one by one. This happened over the
course of about a week or so. I never caught the "perp" but it made me
absolutely crazy.
This is what I think happened..... I think one of those cute striped rats
discovered that flowers are sweet..... and so actually felled the stalks like
a sequoia in order to get at the flower. I tried mothballs, pepper sauce,
live traps and vigilance.... but I lost every last lily and never saw it
happen.
