This is what I think happened..... I think one of those cute striped rats
discovered that flowers are sweet..... and so actually felled the stalks

a sequoia in order to get at the flower. I tried mothballs, pepper sauce,
live traps and vigilance.... but I lost every last lily and never saw it
happen.

Kathy,
Although I can't offer scientific proof, I don't think any living creature is
responsible for what has happened in my garden. I've seen nothing. This
includes marks of any type on either the stalk or fallen blossoms. I've seen
extensive freeze damage on blooms in this area. I think alternating periods
of near freezing and near 80 degree weather somehow interferes with extension
of the stalks?? They appear brittle. We've also had periods of heavy wind
interspersed with the cold and hot. Since I don't know exactly what is going
on, this is strictly a 'theory.'
I've not seen the extensive breakage you describe on your lilies.
