I think that so far, I have to go with the weather theory. I know that deer
have been in the garden recently, but there is no evidence that they were
near the iris. The stalks just seem to have fractured cleanly. The top
part is still in place - there is no evidence of bite marks and noting
caused the severed part to fall to the ground. It is like a spontaneous
separation.
I don't know where your are in Kentucky, but I am only 8 miles from the
Ohio/Kentucky border. We have had a few very cold nights followed by high
winds. So our weather sounds like what you described.
