WIDOW'S VEIL opened two perfectly normal blooms today. It was in one of
the rows that was covered when it got down to ~19oF for two nights a
week or so ago, but was exposed when it reached ~25oF the night before
being covered. The stalks are about the same height as the leaves, but
at least the flowers are pretty. It has been reliable every year here.
So far, no evidence of surviving early buds on any of the other SDBs,
but it's really too soon to tell. Some seem to get early buds killed,
but send up a few later stalks that make it.
Gorgeous full bloom of 'companion plants' in one of the mixed
iris/perennial beds out front - masses of dusty rose henbit (Lamium
purpureum) & dandelions, nestled amongst the chickweed & scattered grape
hyacinths. Very pretty for now, & the bees, wasps etc are having a
field day. Always nice to have masses of color of something, just in
case the irises get frozen <g>

pears are reaching full bloom so it must be time for another hard
freeze, but none in the forecast for at least another week....
