Here in the hot desert, I have had good luck with potting rhizomes that
arrive in mid-summer. I use a mixture of about 3/4 potting soil and 1/4
sand, throwing in a little slow-release fertilizer. I keep the pots in a
shaded area (under a mesquite tree) until it cools off enough to plant out in
my beds.
I normally dig in September, but I am planning to try something new with
my rebloomers this year. Digging and replanting them in September seems to
discourage rebloom the first year, so I am going to dig some of them about a
month after bloom and pot them. Hopefully, they will survive and produce
good rebloom in the fall. Anyway, that's the plan! I'll report back this
winter on the results.
Best early newbies in my garden so far are beautifully branched stalks of
Solar System Special (Pinegar 2000) and Winter Dance (Maryott 99).
