Someone mentioned the "rock thing" to me last fall. I'd never heard of it
before. I did dash around my garden putting rocks on the smaller plants,
including some of my irises. I didn't have enough time to put rocks on all
my newly planted iris. I checked on them this week, and none of them had
heaved (MDB & SDB). They were planted at the end of July last year.
Another nursery bed (SDB, IB, BB, MTB, TB) however, that is more exposed,
had some irises heaved up slightly, whether they had a rock on them or not.
Obviously, the rock wasn't heavy enough. The nursery bed (MDB & SDB) that
was already 1 yr old had no rocks placed on them and there doesn't appear to
be any heaving. These too were mostly planted last July. I'll have to take
my notebook with me and mark which irises I had to press back into the soil,
to see if it affects their performance this year.
I did put a large rock on both Edith Wolford and Beverley Sills, in
particular, since I've mentioned this is the 3rd and last time I try to grow
either of these TB's. They both look like they're greening up OK.
It was so blustery and rainy yesterday, that I never checked any of my
gardens. brrrrrr
