In honor of John's request for more questions (and since I stuck a nail
in my foot this afternoon and am somewhat immobilized....)...
I posted a photo of a nice clump of I. reichenbachii in bloom on
iris-photos. Which prompted an offlist request for information on
possible sources of I. balkana or other strains of reichenbachii.
I had noticed balkana in some of the pedigrees of 'recent' Hager irises
& wondered if anybody knows the original source of his plants or anybody
who still might have some alive? Jim & Vickie Craig are pretty sure Ben
Hager got his from Phil Edinger, but they think that those and balkana
previously grown by Schreiners and Joe Ghio are no longer around.
Jim & Vickie say that several folks are out beating the bushes for
balkana, especially the reblooming one (or maybe it is just a source of
reblooming genes - I don't even know what color it's supposed to be).
Anybody know of sources for these, maybe somewhere other than the US?
Seeds, plants, hometown?
I put balkana/reichenbachii in the subject line because I think these
were or are confused with one another or maybe the same. I will check
in the archives later - I know someone who seemed to know the species
commented on this the last time I posted but I've forgotten what was
said, other than that primary interest seemed to be in the reblooming
form.
I was mostly just interested in how this/these species liked the Rot
Queen's garden (quite well, as you can see from the photo) because it
seemed to show up (or I thought it did at the time) in pedigrees of
several tough oncers I grow.
How's that, John? & all you other 600 people who aren't saying much.
