Not something I've tried; deer don't come far enough inside the
city to find my garden.
However, I've heard of something likely to work for this situation.
Plant a border of hot peppers - the hotter the better - all the way
around the garden, except where fences or gates block the
path into the garden. Most deer will get a sudden urge to be
elsewhere after tasting one hot pepper leaf, if you pick a variety
that's hot enough, and will remember the taste well enough to
avoid the area afterwards.
Works on most mammals but doesn't work at all on birds.
Unless you like hot peppers, you don't need a growing season
long enough to let the plants actually produce peppers.
May not be a good idea if you have small children around.
Wear gloves when handling varieties hotter than you're used
to eating. And don't let the gloves touch your eyes or other
sensitive areas of the body.
The two hottest varieties are habanero and Scotch bonnet.
Cayenne is another hot variety. Do a web search for Scoville
scale if you need more information.
If you also grow other peppers, you should check which
varieties hybridize with which other varieties; the pollen
parent has a strong effect on the taste of the pepper pod
produced with its pollen.
