Re:OT:Deer repellent sprays

There are several recipes for deer repellent sprays--all the way from
hanging bars of Irish Spring to taking a stick and wrapping the end with
burlap or other material--and pouring Mountain Lion scent on the material--
Orange peelings--we all save our orange peelings and give to a friend who
lives out and has many deer--she grinds the peelings--stores the ground
peelings in the freezer--then goes out every couple days and sprinkle some
around--safer than mothballs--and works well in the winter
Sprays--recipes vary--usually has some oil and hand dishwashing soap, add a
half smoked Cigar, some urine--Tabasco--and whatever else you want--
oil and soap help the spray to stay on leaves, urine--is a human
smell--Tabasco--burns their mouth, Cigar--who knows?
When I was growing up--we lived out --very much in the country--and my Mom
used Cayenne--Red Pepper--sprinkled it around the plants--and when the deer
ate the leaves--we could hear them sneezing--and that really did work--Mom
also used Blood Meal--that works well--
But anything you use has to constantly be reapplied--especially when there
is rain frequently--
And the new breed of 'City Deer' are quite used to people and dogs, and just
ignore them now--
one of our Iris Friends lives out--next to a river--and her problem is
Mountain Sheep--they have many Pine trees--and so they buy heavy fish leader
and string it between the trees--one string about 3' up and another string
about 4 feet high--when the animals walk into the fish leader--they cannot
see it and it spooks them--and off they go!
Our City Deer here do not bother my Iris--they even make beds under the
Apple Tree in the midst of Siberians and Spurias--but they sure eat the
yellow tulips--no other color--just the yellow ones--so I put some 2 X 4
wire around the clumps of the yellow tulips to protect them-- if I had to
protect the Iris--I think I might just give up--too many all around.
At the club garden--we have used all of the above--and finally have pretty
well given up--because they do not seem to eat the Iris--just bite them and
pull them up--then decide they do not like the taste and drop the rhizome in
the snow--so in the spring we just go out and rebury the rhizome--
So--you might try the sprays--fine an old sprayer--and good luck--
Carryl zone 3/4 in western Montana--one day of nice weather--then back to
cold again--
