I agree with the comments on growth characteristics regarding
Byers irises but disagree with the comments on form. What I grew/grow
were/are not behind in form. No, they don't have the overlapping,
ice cream scoop falls, but they aren't narrow either. Not every iris
has to have a 'Keppel fall' or a Ghio 'bubble ruffle' to be
pleasing. (A perfectly grown stalk with three open of Gordon Plough's
STUDY IN BLACK in all of its tailored splendor can still take one's
breath away). Monty will soon get his third Dykes' on things 'mostly
behind on form'?
Among the irises opening blooms today is HOWDY DO, Byers, '86.
This has got to be one of Monty's first introductions. It can
compete with the newest releases and was my first SA after losing SKY
HOOKS many years ago. HD stays in the garden because of
dependablility year in and year out. Never been sick.
CANTINA is one of the very best rebloomers and is still 'modern'
though it may be aging. Mike Sutton reported getting horrid children
from C, but I am looking at some C x Violet Reprise seedlings which
are very good. There may be some keepers here. Rebloom is unknown
since these seedlings are giving maiden bloom.
Almost forgot about Monty's PAGAN PINK. That one grabs me every
year about this time, too!
