Re: Bloom reliability

Don't give up yet. I was told Edith Wolford may not do well here and it has done better than many.

  Subject: [iris-talk] Bloom reliability

I was visiting with another iris lover a couple days ago and
mentioned that I had nice bloom stalks on my Edith Wolford
and Immortality. He casually said that I must have just
purchased them. I told him that I'd bought them from
Schreiner's last year but how did he know? He said that
those don't bloom well in the Dallas, TX area and that the
blooms had been set in the rhizomes last year in Oregon. He
went on to say that the blooms for next year are set this
year about six weeks after the current bloom ends.

That was very interesting and disappointing for me as I had
planned on dividing the clumps and growing more new plants
from them but will now wait another year and see if they
will bloom here or not next year. If no blooms next year, I
guess I dig them up and either toss them or give them to
someone who lives where they will bloom (any takers?). Is
there some kind of rule of thumb on determining which
varieties will bloom in different climates? I've ordered
another 50 or so varieties already this year and hate to
throw my money away in a crap shoot.
