Re: TB that do NOT make it thru hard winter

Chuck Chapman lists Forge Fire and Rosette Wine as tender.  Forge Fire has
survived two winters for me...........it has yet to bloom.  I read another
listing that had Rosette Wine as being hardy in Saskatchewan (zone 3).

I come from a dairy farm background and for anyone familar with the breeding of
dairy cattle, there is a massive amount of statistics kept on the breeding
stock, in particular, on the "sires" used in artifical insemination.

I think it would be possible (given enough information) to develop ratings on
irises for things like - cold hardiness, rot resistance, heat resistance, etc.
By using large amounts of information it is generally possible to statistically
separate genetics from environmental factors.

In dairy cattle it is the Breed Associations that do a lot of the collecting and
compiling of data.........perhaps the AIS and CIS could undertake that type of
project.

I know it can be very discouraging for beginners to keep buying irises and to
keep seeing them die (not to mention costly).  I think a lot of people give up
on TB irises because of the poor results they get with them.
