Laurie,
I would have thought that it isn't necessrily just the cold that would make
an iris viable or non-viable in an area. I would assume that rainfall
pattern, ground freezing rates (which would be affected by soil type/depth
I assume), drainage of the individual garden would all be as important in a
microclimate-type-way to the survival of the rhizomes as would the basic
temperature.
I'm somewhat warmer than you (USDA Zone 8 equivalent in Australia I think)
but even I have been warned off certain varieties that "can't be grown" in
my area. Some of them have grown wonderfully and I can't see the problem
at all??
I would think that if you trake other peoples ratings of irises as gospel
then you'll miss out on some wonderful iris that might become favourites
for you. You might even be able to recommend then to others <grin>.
All the best in building your addiction to irises. It certainly becomes
all-encompassing <big grin>.
Cheers.
