We have both two and four footed kids. Squirrels are also
repelled by mothballs, so we have used them in the garden.
The best way to avoid accidental ingestion is to make small cylindrical
cages out of hardware cloth. Drop in a few mothballs and
close the cage, and either set or hang them in and around
the irises. Now if I could find a way to get the squirrels to EAT the
mothballs....
