Most of the checklist entries are written by the hybridizer.
Some observe more detail than others, just as some breed
and introduce more/better irises than others. If you want to
see detail in descriptions and lineage, read some of Keith
Keppel's entries in the 1990's checklists <G>.
The other reason that the checklists have limited information
is probably due to the times of the introductions. I doubt
that few if any of the hybridizers from the 20's thru the 50's really
had an inkling of what was to come in development of color
patterns, beards, horns, etc. A short and simple description would
seem to suffice when only 100 or so irises were introduced in a
year, compared to nearly a thousand now. I believe that a section
was just added a few years ago to really describe beards.
It does make identification harder, but that is part of the fun....I think
