" Is Romantic Evening better used as a pod or pollen parent?"
All of the offspring of which I am aware are from RE pollen. My own
crosses are from its pollen also, although I did attempt to set pods
with a similar result as yours, although its pollen seems to set pods
readily even on some reluctant parents.
In progenies a small percentage of the seedlings will lack
chlorophyll. This is especially evident in F2 double RE ancestry
according to Keith Keppel.
I am finding RE to be quite satisfactory in performance here all in
all, as is also its offspring, Wild Wings. Keppel warns that
Romantic Evening has been used quite heavily by many breeders, so
the progenies from our continuing use may not yield much of anything
different from what is already or soon to be marketed. That worries
me not in the slightest, as my objectives are not the bicolors or
banded bicolors for which Romantic Evening is a premium genetic pot.
It also has good branching, satisfactory bud count, decent form (and
superior form in some offspring) and a lot of potential for many
colors, whether bi-color or self. I find the occasional posts in
Iris-Photos of RE offspring especially interesting.
