Re: HYB: True Pink Beard

Walter,

No true Pink Beards, but wow. I have the pleasure this year of growing some
of Vern Woods First Year Seedlings, and one cross has been remarkable:

Seedling : 9953 [( Pink Quartz x April in Paris) x Glad Choice)] x
Seedling 9946 [(Pink Dancer x Valentine's Day) x Arctic Fox]. Although the
pinks from the cross are among the best I have seen, there is one that has a
unique "silver" lavender color to die for, together with a ruffled flower
form. It is tempting to move the markers and claim it as my own, but the
guilt would be crushing. Anyway, Vern is great with pollen, etc., and he
allows me full use of his material for my own breeding.

Poem of Ecstasy -- which is so good at my garden (less than 7 minutes from
its birthplace at Melrose Gardens), has produced interesting children with
enormous flowers and wide branching. Some have better color depth and
separation than the parent, many do not. I talked to Sid DuBose last night,
and he reports the best bloom at Melrose Gardens in many, many years.
Nearby, Elsiemae Nicholson of Stockton, a long-time iris personality, reports
her best bloom in years as well. Elsiemae, now in her 80s (don't tell her I
said that) broke her thigh bone last week, and is walking around her up to
date, first rate iris planting with a walker.

Regards, Abe
