This is my first year growing Iris (in El Paso, TX) so I had
nothing but anticipation and high hopes for a great season. The soil,
hahahaha, pardon my rudeness, actually pure sand, was amended with peat
and literally sacks and sacks of organic forest compost, home made
compost, chopped up leaves and anything that would help. The results of
my labors have not only produced REAL honest to gosh soil (and worms) but
my Iris are doing great.
First to bloom was a MDB, GRAPELETTE on March 21, a SDB, IRISH
CHANT, March 26, who has produced so many blooms I have lost count. I
counted 14 moments ago. . SEASTONE, SDB, is nearly open with two blooms.
Of my Arilbreds, PERSIAN QUEST, OGB+, was the first with 2 stalks
on March 28. Next came HEIMDALL, OGB, with one lovely bloom. PERSIAN
PADASHAH, OGB+, is nearly open (4 bloom stalks) and a number of others
are showing color. POGO DOLL, OGM, is showing color. . .
I'm anxious for the TB's to start. . my front yard is going to be
a car stopper! And I can hardly wait for my broken color Iris from Zebra
Gardens to bloom - Oh. . .and the SA's. This will be my first time
growing them!
Then comes the Spurias!
El Paso is a LONG way from Fayetteville, Arkansas. . . the
challenge of the soil and the love of Iris has helped me through the "I
hate it here. . I wanna go back home" period.
