Re: HYB: Seed germination in the ground

Thanks Vickie for the soil temperature information.

One of our club's hybridizers (Tom Parkhill) always plants his seeds in
the open ground in rows. He has good soil, on top of a hill near the
lake, so doesn't have the excessive problems with late freezes & other
stuff that I do. He has good success this way.

I have grown mine in the ground in a bed surrounded with boards and have
used large, galvanized washtubs from the dump with bulletholes for
drainage, planting seeds in rows. Both of these work well, but have
been erratic and slow, plus seeds tend to wash around some. Just like
my more intensive efforts <g>.

I was so successful with 'pushing' the seedlings that did germinate last
year that I will focus my efforts on the seedlings rather than the seeds
from now on. Maybe. Until I change my mind. <g>
