Lousy bloom season

OK, I'm sure others besides me have had this problem, and I'll admit
to not having read very much of my mail, but saw Donald had a problem:
I just now have first bloom spikes on my TBs and I'm going to have either
a very late or very poor bloom year... it must have been that very late
freeze, down to 15 blasted degrees F about four weeks ago (Floridians
complain about 15 degrees C ;-)). The destruction in my yard has yet
to be reckoned but it shriveled all sorts of new foliage and likely
severely killed back my bottlebrush and more. I lost my loquat crop
for the year :-(
Now I *thought* TBs to be more cold immune than that but I guess not
when they are going to bloom? the foliage hadn't grown much because
of lack of rain, but shortly after the 15 F we got some rain... and
they'd been irrigated occasionally before that (I don't use much
irrigation water because it's terribly alkaline and causes more
problems than it solves in the winter).
The Dutch iris are blooming like champs but the arils are behind, which
is odd. Wonder of wonders I had a non-species tulip rebloom from last year
-- one -- but since that is Never Supposed To Happen Here it was gratefully
appreciated. Other than that, and some pretty glorious Japanese maple
foliage shows, it has been a slow spring. I don't know if I'll get
daylily bloom this year or not due to the extreme die back of a lot
of the foliage and the plants having to scramble to make more.
--Amy (in the city proper some TBs are in bloom, but they are the older
varieties and it did not get quite so cold there)
