First bloom of the bearded iris season - WIDOW'S VEIL, a deformed flower
blooming almost on the ground, but what the heck, I'm thrilled.
I took a closer look at which/how many plants were killed or severely
damaged by the freeze & found a total of 6 killed to the ground, & maybe
three times that many more than slightly damaged to nearly dead. All of
these damaged plants were newly purchased last year from California.
Interestingly, the least damaged new plants were from Schreiners (their
intros) and Wildwood (Tompkins and Plotner intros) - I ordered from both
of these places at the last minute, & got them into the ground late. In
fact, we had already had frost by the time the Schreiner intros were in
the ground. I was worried that the Schreiner intros wouldn't make it
thru the winter without some help, so left a ragged piece of Reemay over
them all winter. Maybe I need to do this with all my new plants - sure
did keep down leaf spots/aphid bites.
Next year, if I order from California growers again, I will experiment
with keeping them covered thru the entire winter as well. I have no
idea if the plants suffered from not being acclimated, being vulnerable
cultivars, or both. I suspect both.
