Ok folks, here is something for a laugh. We use elastic for labels. I know
this sounds weird but we happened to inherit some 1" wide elastic with small
slits cut into it. We cut it into 5" strips, number them and then attach
those to the stalks by sliding one end through the slit. The first good
part is there is nothing hard or sharp to scratch or damage the pod, stalk
or adjacent blooms. The second good part is they take rain, hail sleet, or
wind without disappearing or becoming illegible. To date we have never had
one disappear off a plant either. They only last about 2 years before the
elastic starts to rot but then we throw them away and move on.

I am not a expert but I have used labels I made out of a 2 liter plastic pop
bottle. I take a bottle and cut the top and bottom off were it starts to
curve. Then I take scissors and cut the bottle open giving you a flat sheet
of plastic.Then I cut that into strips 2 in.wide x 4 in.long. I punch a hole
in it with a paper punch and put a bread twist tie in it.I use a label maker
to put the cross on the label(you can use numbers or what ever system you
use). The labels are light and don't hurt the pod(unless the kids decide to
pull them off)
