I use a Sharpie. They have held up really well. Slide the opposite end of
the elastic strip through the slit. I keep the slit a little smaller than
the width of the strip and when I cut them I actually cut them on the
diagonal so I can take one pointed end and poke it through the slit. The
elastic holds itself tight.
Sounds strange but works really well!!

I have two questions, though: What do you write a number on them
with that doesn't become illegible? And "sliding one end" of
what "through the slit"? Itself? What keeps it from sliding out
again, unless you shape it in some way?
