Here, in western Montana we have been growing Aril-breds for several
years--Louella came up and did a Judge's Training session on AB's--and told
us to try the 1/2 breeds--that they would have a much better chance of
surviving here--
One of our club members has managed to grow 3/4 Arils--but her garden is in
its own little micro-climate--protected from winds and really cold temps.
Our club garden is very unprotected--wind blows from across the river and
over the garden-- we had a couple bad days this winter--temp about '0' and
wind strong enough to drop us down to -25 for two days--and hardly any snow
cover for protection--but we have at least 10 AB's there--some which look
very Aril, and some which look very Bearded--TB's and Medians--
Louella does not water hers after they bloom--but ours are in a bed
surrounded by Antiques, Historicals and Space Agers--and they get watered
twice a week from Spring to late Fall--and they still do great--
Our soil is very alkaline--hard clay--and when we redo a bed we add lots of
compost--and we do not treat the AB's any different from the other TB's--so
I think you would be able to grow them almost anywhere--and even if you try
to drown them like we do--they should still survive--
Our club garden is a Display Garden for MDB's, Medians, TB's, Siberians, and
Historics--and the Iris which survive there should grow almost anywhere--we
do not 'coddle' and variety--
The main focus of the club garden is to be growing the' newest and bestest'
and to show visitors which varieties of Iris grow well in our area--we have
info available, and for Arils and AB's we discuss how the bloom can look
very much like a TB and not like an Aril, and also the reverse--
and we have both oncos and regelias and an explanation of the flower forms--
So try some Aril-breds--you might start out with some of the older
ones--which are very hardy, and if they survive, then try some of the newer
ones--they are all quite beautiful!!!
Carryl in western Montana--where we are finally starting into
spring--danfordias are starting to bloom!!!
