CULT: color variability in same cv

Good Morning All,
An iris friend is facing a bit of a dilemma that got me wondering. She
purchased several rhizomes of MARY FRANCES from different large
commercial growers last fall and planted them in her garden under
identical growing conditions side by side. At least I *think* the MF
rhizomes came from different sources, and my question here is based on
that assumption. The problem is that most of the rhizomes are blooming a
pale bluish orchid, while one is blooming a noticeably more lavender
orchid. My friend is now wondering which is the "real" MF.
And here's what I'm wondering about. If I purchased 5 MF (or any other
cv) rhizomes from 5 different reputable commercial growers and they all
bloomed the following spring, would it be possible for the stored
nutrients from the previous growing location to affect the color of the
first bloom on these plants in my garden and cause them to take on
slightly different color hues in spite of being the same cv? We all know
the same cv can look quite different under different growing conditions,
but how long do these effects continue (if at all) once the cv has been
moved to a new location?
In my own experience, I purchased and planted BELVI QUEEN from Sutton's
in the summer of '00, and she bloomed that fall. That same fall, Janet
Natale (I think) posted a pic of her blooming BQ to iris-photos, and I
was stunned by how washed out hers appeared in comparison to the rich,
deep, saturated colors in mine. I couldn't believe they were even the
same plant until my BQ bloomed again in summer '01 with colors matching
those of Janet's! Were those first rich blooms the result of stored
nutrients from Sutton's, or were they an affectation of the rather
dramatic shift in climatic conditions from CA to MN?
Speculation or experience, anyone?
Laurie
