Dear Sue in NH:
You should be able to successfully move the irises from your cold frame now.
Since there is little root growth, you won't be disturbing them that much.
When we get iris plants too late to plant in the fall (after mid-September),
we pot them up in a good potting mix and sink the pots halfway in the ground.
These are covered with evergreen branches to protect them from freezing and
thawing. Then we place them where we want them in the spring without
disturbing any roots. We are in the process of doing this now. This has
been very successful in our Zone 5 garden.
