RE: RE:CULT:Freeze Damage was Cult-moving

I agree with Walter for the most part except we have identified a couple of
common denominators, at least at our house.
1. There was almost no damage to SDB's
2. Most damage done to newest beds
3. In the newest beds the most damage was incurred by the iris planted
EARLIEST in the year, the later plantings took almost no damage
4. AB's took a hit.

One thing to keep in mind is that we didn't just freeze, we went down to 10
degrees!!! That is really cold for us at any time of the winter, much less
this late in the year. Most things are bouncing back from it but the leaf
tips are damaged.

Yes, freeze damage is very evident in my garden. The bloom has been
set back
by weeks instead of days. Some clumps look like they were hit by a flame
thrower
because the foliage has turned yellow and brown and died back.. Others are
a
washed out green and some are green with ribbed and gnarled leaves.

I cannot find anything in common for those that are damaged. It
doesn't make
sense that the SDBs should be unaffected but some of the talls badly
damaged.
And, the damaged talls aren't necessarily early bloomers. ATLANTA BELLE is
registered as an "L" bloomer and has always bloomed late for me probably
will die
from freeze damage. I have bloom today on two arilbreds, and they were
totally
unaffected by the late freezes, but the rest of the crop was wiped out. Can
anybody
see anything any of these freeze damaged plants have in common? All of
these
are in an open bed north of the house.
