  After reading your message, I am seeing some common 
denominators.

   My worst damage is on established clumps in beds.

  There is almost no damage in the back forty where things are 
rowed out and cultivated by John Deere and yours truly.  The entire 
back forty was reset in May, September, and October.    The re-
select seedlings were transplanted in May, right after bloom so as 
to get increase faster.
