Back in the early to mid '60's when I was a neophyte iris grower my mentor
directed me to an iris garden about 10 miles away for where we lived (in
downstate N.Y.). It turned out to be that of Fred Cassebeer. Just a couple
of years earlier my wife "chewed me out soundly" for spending $13.00 for
eleven rhizomes and especially the $3.50 I paid for Frost and Flame. It was
in Fred's garden that we first saw Stepping Out and young wife saw
absolutely no reason why she couldn't spend $25.00 for one rhizome. Not only
did Fred dig the rhizome then and there but he also gave us the bloom stalk.
So you can see that it is not only in WA and OR where this procedure is
practiced and obviously is nothing new.

effort at hybridizing (Dot and Dash X Stepping Out)]. I thought the results
were excellent - BUT - my mentor said "Trash 'em!!!"
